What is Emergency Lighting?

Legislation requires all occupied buildings to have adequate escape lighting to allow safe exit should mains power fail.

Emergency lighting is normally required to operate fully automatically and give illumination of a sufficiently high level to enable all occupants to evacuate the premises safely.

BS 5266-1:2025 provides guidance on the design, installation and maintenance of emergency lighting systems, helping to ensure that escape routes and essential safety equipment remain clearly visible if the normal lighting supply fails.

The Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 1997 & BS5266 part 1 require building owners to test emergency lighting systems regularly and maintain them in proper working order.
